Healthy Lifestyles, Science Says Honey Is Best for Burns
December 30, 2009 by shirley

Healthy lifestyles can be considered quaint when we have new chemical plants making highly expensive new cures, sometimes for maladies not worth the effort. And the discovery that honey will cure a burn up to four days faster than the most powerful new cures for burns.
So, using honey on a burn as the most effective is the tip of the iceberg of healthy lifestyles. It is your entire approach to life: how much you respect and love your inner being to care deeply and gently for you.
When it comes to scientific thinking before science there are surprises. Now even centuries after Egypt had faded as the power and the center of the civilized world, some of their knowledge knew better than we.
But in the past centuries when tombs were uncovered it was found that amidst all the dust and crumbling heirlooms, sealed jars of honey were found. When tasted and tested the honey still tasted and tested as fresh after having been sealed for thousands of years.
And since then we have imported gun powder from the east and built empires everywhere that have come and gone as have the tides of Canute.
And grand advisers and wise men have made their fortunes finding new potions that would cure many matters that ail us. And through history one constant issue is burns to the body whether by poor housing and candles, or mobs with torches.
So many potions have been devised over the centuries to deal with injuries and burns, and any study of evolving science shows this. Almost with hilarity from a century ago were the many remedies that often contained opium as well as horse manure.
Now a study comes to us that suggest that antique science books may have had it right before we got to this century with all our brilliant science bringing us sterile modern gauze, and antibiotic creams with exceptional new high power capacities to heal? Surely.
Well, wrong. In a review of 15 studies, New Zealand researchers found that burned skin covered with honey healed as much as four days faster than skin treated with antibiotic creams and sterile wound dressings.
Lead study author P.C. Molan, Ph.D says honey is ideal because it rapidly soothes the pain, promotes healing, and prevents further damages.
The next burn in your family deserves that you cool the skin with cold water and then spread ample honey on some clean gauze and apply it to the burn. Change the dressing twice a day. And if it is more severe, of course, see your doctor. If you lived in ancient Egypt, this knowledge was available at your local wise man, even if he might have killed you in some other remedy.
I also put honey in my tea, as one way to get some of the healing power inside as well. Solid honey has more anti oxidants, and could be melted down easily for application, although liquid honey would be quicker in an emergency. Best to keep some of both around for the security of your healthy lifestyles. Here’s to your good health.
Derek Dashwood notices how healthy lifestyles so often have a benefit that science confirms long after many of us had known. Such as news that honey is the most effective treatment to allow burns to heal: up to four days before the most effective known new antibiotic creams and sterile wound dressings. We discuss this at

How Healthy Food Can Effect our Skin

We all want to be healthy, wealthy and beautiful. But when it comes to talking about beauty, some people know a lot about skin care, while others haven’t a clue what our skin is designed for.
When we reach the age that we begin to see fine lines and wrinkles, we start to look for solutions. I may not be a doctor, but I studied anatomy and physiology while at university and I know that our skin deserves all the nutrition we can give it. If anything, we have to feed our skin natural, healthy, raw food instead of processed food if we expect it to stand up to wind and sun.
The skin normally renews its cells every 28 days. We can talk all day long about lotions and creams, but applying a cream with nutrients to the surface of our skin does not ensure that those nutrients actually penetrate into our skin cells.
I want to share a personal story with you. A couple of years ago my 30-year-old son fell ill and I was shocked by the doctors’ diagnoses. One said that his intestines were abnormally long and the other said he had warm tape! I couldn’t believe it.
Neither could my son. Rejecting what the doctors had said, he decided to clean his body. At first, he visited doctors who specialized in natural medicine. They put him on a diet, but all that did was cause him to lose a lot of weight. He then turned to reading about alternative medicine, followed their recipes and instructions, and cleaned his liver. As a result, he was able to get rid of 30 stones from his liver.
When I visited my son in Europe recently, I was amazed at how he looked so radiant and healthy, his skin practically glowing. He told me that he ate five times a day, eating nothing but natural, balanced food and forgoing anything that had added salt or sugar, as well as no smoked foods or white bread, and drank fresh juice every day.
His story typifies how a clean body and good nutrients can affect our skin. By ensuring that our body has the nutrients it needs, and by including a few key herbs, oils and other remedies in our regular routine, we can not only quickly improve the quality of our skin, but we can also look good as well as feel young and healthy. Essential fatty acids are vital to our skin. Good-quality oils help to keep skin lubricated and healthy overall, since what happens inside your body determines the quality of your skin.
While the main goal is to detoxify our bodies for our own good health and a healthy skin, it is also important to create good eating habits for our children. A child is a mirror of our own habits, and by giving our babies some bites of cake, pizza or overcooked food rather than fruits and vegetables when they start to eat real food, we are creating some very bad habits for them. The answer, of course, is education.
Processing removes essential nutrients from foods, may also destroy nutrients or change them into toxic substances. We need to teach our kids to eat those foods that are rich in antioxidants, such as blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and plums. A wide variety of different foods is always recommended for a healthy balanced diet so that the body receives the vast complement of nutrients it needs for good health. Replace processed foods with fresh ones, don’t eat junk food, don’t drink soft drinks, stay away from sugar, and you’ll be well on your way looking younger.
Simply eat a well-balanced and varied diet that includes more then 25 ingredients per day and have a healthy lifestyle. Believe me, it will help to keep your skin in good condition. Simple Ways to Eating Healthy

Eating healthy does not mean having to eat bland tasteless foods or throwing out some of your favorite foods. It does not mean having to spend a fortune on specialty organic foods either. In fact, people can learn to eat healthier by making small simple modifications to their current eating habits.
Healthy eating should be considered a lifestyle modification and not a short term diet. Rather you want to eat healthy in order to lose weight or just improve your health these quick and easy tips will get you started.
Eating Healthy Tip #1 ? Reduce Sugar Intake
Refined sugar is a processed item that gives you zero nutritional benefit. These empty calories can mount up fast and can risk you go over your total daily calorie intake maximum. Too many calories will create weight gain. Try to limit snacks high in sugar or seek out the sugar free versions of your favorite sweets.
Look for the sugars in your beverages as well. A regular flavored pop has up to or exceeds 100 calories and 10 teaspoons of sugar. Drink diet drinks, or better yet, water. Statistics show that people who switched to diet pop and water instead of regular flavored drinks lost up to 20 pounds in just one year with just this alteration in their lifestyle. Fruit juices can also be high in sugars and calories so minimize these to just one 8 ounce glass a day.
Eating Healthy Tip #2 Protein with Every Meal
You should have protein with every meal. Protein requires more energy to digest which means you can burn more calories to process your meal. Protein can come from eggs, beans, lean cuts of meats, fish and even tofu.
Eating protein not only helps burn more calories but helps to build lean muscle mass. The more lean muscles you have the higher your basal metabolic rate. This is the rate at which your body burns calories during the day with normal activities including sleeping. Your metabolic rate is responsible for 60% to 70% of the total calories you burn in a day.
Eating Healthy Tip #3 ? Go Natural
Eating foods in their most natural state will give you the most ?bang for your buck?. Meaning you will get a higher nutrient value from the foods in their natural state. When foods are processed they lose a lot of their health benefits and often raise the fat and/or calorie content.
As an example, a large apple has 110 calories, 0 fat grams, 29 carbohydrates, 5 grams dietary fiber and 1 gram of protein. However a large glass of apple juice has about 150 calories, 0 fat grams, 36 grams of carbohydrates and 0 grams of dietary fiber and protein. So you can see that the processed item there are more calories and carbs and less dietary fiber and protein.
Eating Healthy Tip #4 ? Make it Whole
While eating foods in their most natural state is the best, there are moments when you will need processed foods. Breads and pastas are good examples of foods that cannot come in a natural state as they don?t grow on trees or in the ground. When choosing these processed foods you should find whole grain versions.
When foods are made with 100% whole wheat you are getting more vitamins and minerals than foods made with processed flour. Wheat in its natural, unrefined state has many nutritional value including dietary fiber and is a great addition for your healthy eating habits.
Eating Healthy Eating Tip #5 ? Add Variety
Consume a variety of nutrient rich foods. There are more than 40 nutrients that you should consume each day. No individual food item can provide all of these nutrients, so make your meal plan varied and rich with nutrients. Be sure to eat the fruits and vegetables with all your meals. You need to get protein with every meal. Protein requires more energy to burn than fat so foods high in protein are also great for burning fat.
Make sure to get your calcium needs also with milk, cheese and other dairy products. Opt for fat free or reduced fat products like skim milk or fat free yogurt. Statistics have shown that people who get 3 to 4 servings in a day of low fat dairy items lost more weight than those who did not add dairy in their daily diet.
These are just a handful of tips to help you make minor changes to your lifestyle. By adopting these easy modifications you are on the path to eating healthy for life and losing weight.

Healthy Lifestyles, Surf, Turf, Fruit & Some Berries – Bliss Can Be Guided

As I had talked about the importance of omega three fish oils being in our bodies, along the the freshest dark fruits and vegetables, along with harmony in the village and progress being seen, poor people can come to feel, with each small advance, a bit little more rich.
So comes this easy to remember term to eat Surf and Turf, such as cold water fish and dark fruits and veggies, to fight against cancers add who cancer fighting champions with the new power cohort champs.
Science has again confirmed that two powerful antioxidant foods, when combined, magnify their cancer fighter power by more than double. What began as party talk between two scientists resulted in them combining their research to how how there might be any unexpected additional good effects. So, Allan Conney, Ph.D from Rutgers and George C. Wagner, Ph.D realized while one was looking at health benefits of caffeine on Parkinson’s Disease, the other was studying green tea and skin-cancer protection.
Their discovery was that the combination of caffeine and exercise may shield you from skin cancer. It is always a good feeling to send good news out, and then to see further research confirms or not. And so we move forward, and are living longer, as we learn to live more healthy lifestyles and care of ourselves.
We know we need to combine eating fish and any dark vegetable or fruit. Tuna and halibut (and other fish) contain selenium, a mineral that raises your levels of a cancer-fighting enzyme called thioredoxin reductase (TR-1). Likewise, broccoli provides sulforaphane, a plant chemical that also boosts TR-1. When British researchers combined these two nutrients, they noticed that the mixed team was 13 times more effective at slowing the growth of cancer cells than each was on their own.
The scientists believe that as selenium concentrations in your cells rise, the ability of sulforaphane to elevate TR-1 increases. Eat a handful sized piece of meat with vegatables regularly. As well as fish, foods such as beef, turkey, Brazil nuts, and mushrooms are excellent sources of selenium. And cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage are also loaded with sulforaphane.
Other good combinations are Salsa and Avocado. The healthiest bright vegetables are rich in carotenoids, powerful plant pigments that reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, and cataracts.
But we love our secret that you now know. As well as vigorous exercise, you can pump yourself with a delicious cup of coffee. And, to fully benefit from these disease-fighting compounds, you need to eat them with fat. In fact, Ohio State University researchers found that people who ate a salad with half an avocado over it absorbed 5 to 10 times more beta-carotene and lutein-carotenoids found in carrots and spinach, than those who ate salad without the fatty avocado.
In addition, the salsa added to the mix boosted the absorption of lycopene, a carotenoid in tomatoes, by almost five times. Fatty acids are needed to help carotenoids dissolve in the intestines, says lead study author Steve Schwartz, Ph.D. These lipids are also an essential part of creating lipoproteins, which transport the carotenoids in the bloodstream.
So for a tighter bottom line: any time you eat colorful vegetables, whether raw or lightly cooked, have some healthy fat too. It does not have to be an avocado, it could be one ounce of cheese, two pats of butter, or two tablespoons of full fat ranch dressing will fill the bill.
So, yes, we do need some fat a day. Two Tablespoons full. And a good long walk, or remember science says all that cold water is sludging fats and grease along your artery walls. Cup of Coffee or tea, will help un stick that goo from your linings. Here is to clean living, clean thoughts, clean linings. And we will savor the joys of life, do good some smile, and smile within the rest of the day. Enjoy your cuppa.

How to Make Healthy Food Choices

People are struggling with maintaining healthy food choices. It is not surprising because they are constantly bombarded with conflicting information about what’s healthy and what’s not and they are also given numerous choices when it comes to food products. With all these choices and information, it is not inevitable that people will end up confused. You probably share the same confusion. Who can blame you?
If you would visit a local grocery store, you would find numerous aisles of different foods. If you would go to a restaurant, you would find pages after pages of menus. With so man food choices, you probably are finding it hard to stick to your “healthy foods only” diet. To make sure that you would go home with a bag full of healthy food choices, here are some tips that you should definitely take note of.
Shop Only When You’re Not Hungry
Go to the grocery store only when your stomach is full. This does not need much explanation. Doing your grocery when your stomach is empty would definitely tempt you to buy anything that catches your fancy. You’d be practically throwing your “healthy food choices” list out of the window. It is best to do your grocery shopping after you have eaten your breakfast in the morning or your dinner in the evening.
Choose Canned or Bottled Products Carefully
First of all, if you are going to buy meat, vegetables and fruits, do not buy those that are packed with oil. If you need to buy these food products, make sure that you buy those that are packed in water. Chances are the water will likely reduce the calories in meat products. Do not buy products that are labeled “hydrogenated”. These products practically scream, “Fats!” You need to have a discerning and careful eye when it comes to sneaky wordings in packages. This is one way to make sure that you only end up with healthy food choices.
You should also avoid products with high fructose or glucose content. Many products like juices and soft drinks are loaded with high fructose content. When you see these words “high fructose” in a grocery product, you should definitely stay away from it. These words basically mean that you would be drinking something with 100% pure sugar in it.
Many manufacturers add high fructose to their products in order to save money. Unfortunately, this causes obesity and diabetes. Examples of this are pancake corn syrups. This is why it is very important that you first check product labels before you buy anything. To be able to make healthy food choices, you need to make sure that you are making informed choices.
Buy Organic Meat and Poultry
When purchasing meat products like beef, pork and poultry, you should definitely consider opting for organic products. These are free from growth hormones, steroids and other chemicals. When buying poultry, you should look for free range chickens because they often tastes delicious than caged chickens. You should also get skinless chicken because bad cholesterols and calories in chickens are concentrated on their skin.
When buying organic foods, it is better to buy them locally. Not only will you help your community’s economy, you will also save energy. This is the additional bonus you get from making healthy food choices.
Make Wise Grocery Product Choices
First of all, you should make sure that you opt for low sodium prepackaged foods. If you are too busy and you have to resort to buying frozen dinners and canned foods, make sure that you get packages with the lowest sodium count. Making these simple healthy food choices will ensure that you will avoid various illnesses like hypertension or cardiac problems.
If you are one of those people who would like to avoid dairy products, you can opt for food alternatives like broccoli. This vegetable is packed with calcium, so you would still be getting the nutrient despite the absence of milk or cheese in your diet.
When buying breads and cereals, you should opt for whole grain foods. Also, make sure that you always read the labels and get products that are low in fat or zero in fat. You can still give in to your sweet cravings without necessarily placing yourself at risk of developing diabetes.
Eating healthy involves making healthy food choices. You need to make sure that every food that gets into your grocery basket is healthy for you and your family.

Making Healthy Food Choices In Our Busy Lives
December 25, 2009 by shirley

You already know how important it is to make healthy food choices for you and your family. But how can you fit the best choices into your busy life?
You’ll be pleased to discover that a hectic life doesn’t mean that every meal has to be fast food on the run! Sometimes it’s difficult to make healthy changes, but with a little planning and know-how, it can be done.
Here are some strategies to help you and your family make healthy choices:
1. Avoid temptation. It’s so easy to walk into the store with good intent, but walk out with bags full of unhealthy foods. Unfortunately, our wills are weak, especially if we’ve trained ourselves over the years to buy junk foods.
* Never shop when you’re hungry. This way you won’t pick out unhealthy choices because they look good at the moment.?
* Get rid of the unhealthy foods in your home. If they aren’t around, you won’t be tempted to eat them.
* Think of healthier alternatives to your family’s favorite unhealthy foods. Rather than high calorie chips, try trail mixes or rice cakes. Low calorie puddings or frozen yogurts are better alternatives to higher fat ice creams.
2. Eat fast and healthy meals at home. When you’re tired at the end of the day and you realize you still have to feed the family, it’s easy to go to a fast food chain and throw fast food on the table. It may save some time, but it won’t save your health – or your pocket book!
* The great thing is that there are many easy, fast, and healthy foods you can make at home. This takes some planning, but you’ll be more satisfied, save money, and be healthier as well.
* Look online for quick and easy recipes made with all natural ingredients. Many recipes can be made in 30 minutes or less and only have 5 ingredients. Taking the time to do some recipe research will save your sanity in the long run. Then once you find a “hit” with the family, store the recipe in a book or on your computer.?
* When you cook, make large batches and freeze the leftovers. This way, you’ll already have meals in the freezer that you can just thaw, heat, and serve. No muss, no fuss! This is the opportune way to enjoy “fast” food at home.
3. Eat Slower. Since the brain takes about 20 minutes to get the signal that the stomach is full, if you eat too fast you’ll pack in a lot more food than you need. When you’re still thinking you’re hungry, it’s easy to make the wrong choices about food. If you slow down while you’re eating, you’ll eat less and you’ll still feel full.
* Set a calming mood before sitting down for a meal. Avoid having the television on or eating as you’re rushing the kids out the door to another activity. Sitting calmly at the table will allow everyone to relax and enjoy their meal.
4. Make dinner time a social experience. Dinner should be about enjoying your company and taking pleasure in the foods you’re eating.
When you begin to look at mealtime as a social experience, it becomes easier to make the right choices about healthy foods. Suddenly you aren’t so worried about rushing through and making it quick.
Dinner becomes a great experience when you’re able to enjoy healthy foods together. Take time to eat as a family and enjoy a real conversation with each other. Talking will naturally slow down your eating pace, while also reconnecting you with your family members.
Using these techniques will bring all kinds of healthy benefits to your family and teach your children a healthy lifestyle. Healthy food choices are a possibility in your busy life if you take the time to plan ahead and make dinner time a priority in your home.

A Guide to Eating Healthy – Adopting a Proper Diet
December 24, 2009 by shirley

Eating healthy can be hard if you have developed a lifetime worth of bad eating habits. This makes it pretty difficult to make the right food choices. This is particularly true these days when everyone seems to live for fast foods. If you live a fairly busy life, it is always more convenient to grab a bag of fries and burger than to actually spend a couple of hours cooking and eating healthy meals. With numerous prepackaged foods in the market, more and more people are finding it easier to just get these foods. Unfortunately, by doing this, they only end up placing their health at greater risks.
Learn Your Nutrition Basics
Eating healthy starts with understanding your nutrition and how the food you eat affects your body and health. What are carbohydrates and how do they help you? What are effects of proteins and vitamins? There are so many nutrition basics that you have to know and understand. Knowing them is the key to eating healthy. They will help you make correct food choices.
The 100-Calorie Snack Packs
You have probably tried the 100-calorie snack pack. This is okay if you donât eat often, but if you do, this is far from being a good choice when it comes to eating healthy. The truth is that, there are practically no real food pieces in these kinds of bags. If you would bother to consider other low-fat foods or low-calorie snacks, you will realize that you are better off with these latter kinds of foods. You can get more food for the same 100-calorie value.
Read the Labels!
The one mistake that many people commit on a daily basis is this â they do not read food labels. People who bother to read product labels tend to make wiser choices than those that donât. Many people randomly throw in items on their grocery cart without bothering to check if they are getting healthy foods or not. If you want to make sure that your family eats only the healthiest foods, you need to check product labels. Check the nutritional value of every food you put into your grocery cart. You would be amazed by how different your choices would be once you start reading and checking labels.
Most food product labels contain information on calories and nutritional value. You would know how much fat a particular product contains and what one serving for the product should be. You should choose products that offer serving sizes that are worth the amount of calories. A bag of a low calorie chips may be a bad choice compared to a slice of pie that is more filling.
Choose Your Foods Well
Eating healthy goes hand in hand with correct food choices. This is easier if you know the effects of nutrition to your health. If you know the difference between complex and simple carbohydrates, you would be accordingly guided when choosing your foods. So, if you love munching on foods, you will be aware of the risks to your health. You will be more careful of what you eat.
Eating healthy is not just about eating three times a day and not eating at all in between. There are people who do not have the time to eat their meals on time. There are people who are just way too busy to even eat three regular meals. There are people who would go to work without eating breakfast or who would forget that they havenât eaten their lunch. For these people, snacking is a more recommended option. You can snack on small amount of foods 5 to 6 times a day. Just make sure that you opt for healthy foods. Otherwise, you would be placing your health at risk. You should opt for low fat foods and stay away from refined sugars. Always eat only a cup of whatever it is that you would be eating. Eat enough but not too much.
Get Your Water Fill
Eating healthy is not limited to foods only. You need to make sure that you get plenty of water everyday. The more water you drink, the less likely you would retain fats. Water flushes out dirt in the body as well. You will also feel fuller for longer period time. Regardless of your eating habits, you need to make sure that drinking plenty of water is part of your diet plan.
Your eating habits ultimately determined your state of health. If you want to ensure that you would have more fruitful years with your loved ones, make sure that you eat right. Eating healthy and a positive lifestyle are the keys to a long life.
